Art

Art focuses on the issues of perception and the problem of translating a three-dimensional world onto a two-dimensional plane. Through examination and application of the elements of art, students will build the skills necessary for solving visual challenges. While this course focuses on drawing as the foundation to build upon, it also introduces students to other mediums including painting, ceramics and sculpting.

Supplies List:

.  I have priced the materials needed at “Michaels Arts and Crafts” which are listed below, but they can be found in other places also.  Fred Meyers may have them, certainly “Tacoma Art Supply” will - downtown near the Art Museum (Commerce and Jefferson), Hobbytown, and many online sources.  Please have the materials within one week of classes starting.  Special interest projects for advanced students may require additional supplies, but I can discuss them as needs arise.  Clay for pottery students is available for sale at school.

 -       Pencils:

Please get graphite pencils in a range of hardness from 4H to 4B.  You may find sets or get individual pencils as hard as 8H or as soft as 8B too.  Some options I saw at Michaels were: Individual pencils @ 1.29 to 1.79.

Reeves sketching pencils, set of 12, 4H-6B, $7.49

Prismacolor Art Pencil Set, medium, set of 12, 6H-4B, $14.99

Kimberly Graphite Drawing Kit, set of 10, 4H-8B, $9.99 (includes an eraser and pencil sharpener.)  This is the best deal and the one I would recommend to start with.

-       Pencil sharpener:

The softer graphite pencils cannot be used in the wall sharpener so a hand held one is needed.  They can be either plastic or metal and range from $.99 to 2.99.

-       Eraser:

Graphite pencils don’t have them attached.  I prefer Pink Pearls.  Artgum erasers and plastic erasers will work also.  Please do not get a kneadable eraser (they are usually gray) as your sole eraser.

                          Artgum $1.29

                          General’s Magic White $1.49

 -       Blending Tortillons

Michaels has a mixed size set for $1.99

-       Drawing Pad or Sketch Pad

Either will work.  Drawing pads generally have slightly better paper, but cost a little more.

Please get an 11x14 size.  The heavier weight paper (in lbs.) the better.   There are several options.  Some at Michaels were:

                          Canson Drawing Pad, 11x14, 70 lb, 50 sheets, $9.99

                          Strathmore Drawing Pad, 11x14, 70 lb, 50 sheets, $9.99

                          Strathmore 400 series, 11x14, 80 lb, 24 sheets, $8.99, (nice paper, but

you would need two of these since they only have 24 sheets.)

                          Strathmore Sketch Pad, 11x14, 50 lb, 100 sheets, $12.99

                          Canson Sketch Pad, 11x14, 65 lb, 100 sheets, $15.99

                          Strathmore Sketch 400 series, 11x14, 60 lb, 100 sheets, $15.99

There are other brand options also.  The Biggie series comes to mind, but I didn’t see them at Michaels when I was there, but they do carry them.
