Course Description
FA 101 9-10     Art I Art I focuses on the issues of perception and the problem of translating a three-dimensional world onto a two-dimensional plane. Through an examination and application of the elements of art, the students will build the skills necessary for solving visual challenges. While this course focuses on drawing as the foundation to build upon, it also introduces students to other mediums including painting, ceramics and sculpting.
FA 201 9-12              Art II
Art II builds upon the foundation laid in Art I. In addition to a continued study of the elements of art, students will focus on issues of composition and the principles of art. They will also delve deeper into the element of color. Using the elements and principles of art they will work on longer term projects to create more complete and complex works. Students will also focus more intently on historical art examples and derive many of their projects from the work of the masters.  Art II also provides the students an opportunity to explore a greater variety of mediums including pastels, papermaking and printmaking techniques.
FA 301 9-12 Art III Art III allows the student greater self-derived exploration of issues, techniques and mediums they would like to focus on to create a body of work. Art III will give the student opportunity to further explore and understand past art movements and styles and relate these to their own work.
FA 401 11-12 Advanced Art Advanced Art explores issues of aesthetics, art criticism and content to help the student formulate strategies in developing a personal expression within their own body of work. They will focus on building a cohesive, advanced portfolio of work centered around the medium and topics of their own choosing.  This course may be repeated for credit.
FA 402 11-12 Graphic Art Graphic Art focuses on the elements and principles of design. Through a hands-on approach the student will apply these elements and principles to produce strong graphic images. Design problems the students will solve include logos, letterheads, poster design, and illustration utilizing a variety of mediums. Students will compare, analyze and evaluate graphic images and discuss their role in our daily lives and examine career opportunities in the graphic arts.  This course may be repeated for credit.
FA 202 9-12 Concert Choir Students in the choir will be exposed to a wide variety of music from the Baroque to the Modern Eras. Students will be taught vocal technique, sight-singing, rhythm, intonation, projection and enunciation. The emphasis of the choir is on service through performance. members of the choir will be expected to attend performances during the school day (school chapels, etc.) and performances outside of the school day: Sunday morning worship services, community events and formal concerts.  This course may be repeated for credit.
FA 203 9-12 Instrumental Music At present, our instrumental music is in the building stage. This course welcomes all traditional musicians in the fields of winds, strings, and percussions. A core musical ability will be gained through theory study and chamber ensembles.  This course may be repeated for credit.
FA 103 9-12 Handchimes Handchimes allows students to play in a musical ensemble while learning music theory. All students will learn to read music and to play handchimes. This group will perform during the school day (school chapels, etc.) and perform outside of the school day: Sunday morning worship services, community events and formal concerts.  No prior experience playing handchimes is necessary to be in this class. The ability to read music is helpful, but not required. This course may be repeated for credit.
FA 102 9-12 Introduction to Theater This class is designed to introduce students to all aspects of theater including history, set design, basic acting techniques, costume design, prop acquisition and design, lighting, sound, and make-up among other topics. This is a hands on, activity oriented class for those who want to further explore the entire process of theater.
MRLH is fully accredited through National Lutheran School Accreditation and the Northwest Accreditation Commission and is fully approved by the Washington State Board of Education.  MRLH maintains membership in both the Washington Federation of Independent Schools and the Evangelical Lutheran Education Association.
MRLH is supported by both LCMS and ELCA congregations and is affiliated with Concordia Lutheran School, Tacoma.
